How we protect the environment

JBF is fully dedicated to sustainability and is committed to assisting its employees, customers, and stakeholders in achieving environmental and sustainability goals.

JBFGE, one of the largest PET producers in Western Europe, is actively contributing to the European Union's efforts to combat plastic pollution. EU member states have committed to achieving a 90% collection target for plastic bottles by 2029. Additionally, there are regulations mandating that plastic bottles must contain a minimum of 25% recycled content by 2025 and 30% by 2030.

JBFGE's current recycling process is already recognized as state-of-the-art, not only in Flanders but throughout Europe. JBF is ahead of schedule in meeting EU sustainability goals, specifically the requirement of having at least 25% recycled content by 2025. Products from JBFGE, such as APE RE25 and APE 80 RE 30, not only contain the required 25% and 30% recycled material but also maintain the same high quality as conventional products. Both the FDA and EFSA, the American and European food agencies, respectively, have already granted approval for JBF's chemical Flakes-to-Resin (“FTR®”) recycling process.

JBF's sustainability journey was started by putting a greenfield project at a co-location site with the main raw material supplier to reduce CO2 emissions and by selecting the latest and most energy-efficient MTR® & FTR® patented technology, licensed by Uhde Inventa-Fischer. The co-location with the feedstock supplier significantly contributes to reducing carbon footprints.

The rPET produced at JBF helps reduce post-consumer PET waste. The utilization of innovative patented chemical recycling technology upholds the circularity of food-contact post-consumer PET materials.

With 25% Post Consumer Recycled (“PCR”) content, the carbon footprint of JBF’s rPET is 19.5% lower than that of JBF’s own vPET and 35.3% lower than the European industry average vPET. This means that JBF's rPET can travel an additional 49,000 kilometers by sea before matching the carbon footprint of the European industry average vPET.

Compared to the European industry average vPET, every 100,000 tonnes of JBF rPET production results in a reduction of 42,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. To put this in perspective, it's equivalent to the CO2 generated by flying around the globe 20 times!

Health, Safety and Environment go on top of our priorities. We do not compromise on these three values at any time and for any reason.

Health:

  • Periodical chemical exposure measurements at different workplaces to ensure that our people work in a healthy and safe environment.
  • Yearly medical checkups for all our employees.

Safety:

  • Using Standard Operating Procedures for safe execution of any work.
  • Training on the job, given by experienced people
  • Eminent system for work permits to ensure that all precautions are in place for service and maintenance jobs.

Environment:

  • Storage areas for chemical agents are designed according to guidelines good practices.
  • Dynamic and dedicated teams deployable and prepared in case of a SEVESO emergency scenario.

As a high tier SEVESO company, we are well prepared for any emergency situations on site with well-trained people and high-class equipment. JBF GE is giving priority to prevent any kind of incident or accident. To achieve this goal, we have implemented a Process Management System for our plant process installations with HAZOP-studies, SIL/LOPA-assessments and the identification, inspection and particular maintenance of Safety Critical Components.

JBF GE is constantly working on a roadmap to produce PET-granulates with the minimum impact to climate and nature.

We protect the environment.

Off-gas is burned in the heaters in order to consume less natural gas and the emission to the atmosphere is also reduced as a result.

We constantly measure our emissions to ensure that the emission is compliant with EU-ETS regulation on Green House Gases. We are also monitoring main consumers in the process installations so that it gives us the opportunity to make adjustments when necessary and to maintain a more efficient energy/consumer ratio.

We have a well deployed integrated waste management system.

We are member of VAL I PAC and work only with registered and certified waste collectors.

We believe in a circular economy.

JBF GE has signed off the Operation Clean Sweep® initiative.

We commit ourselves to do all the necessary for a cleaner environment. Therefore, we implemented programs and awareness campaigns together with the implementation of projects for improving and promoting the implementation of the best practice measures for preventing possible pellet and powder loss to ensure these materials do not end up in the environment.

We are certified under several ISO-standards.

JBF GE assures our employees, customers and all stakeholders that we are monitoring health, safety & environmental, labor standard and human rights risks along with Business ethics though SMETA 4 pillar certification.

JBF GE is committing to standardizing the manufacturing process along with establishing the credibility and trust amongst employees, customers and stakeholders. JBF has an internationally recognized quality management system, achieving:

  • ISO certification for Quality ISO 9001:2015
  • Food safety ISO 22000:2018
  • Occupation health & safety ISO 45001:2018
  • Environment ISO 14001:2015
  • Environment labels & declaration ISO 14021: 2016

Our integrated ISO-certified management systems give us the opportunity to work according to the highest standards in quality, environment, energy and safety to meet the global customers’ requirements.
